Jiggly milk is serious business

It is possible to shock most people with two very ordinary facts:

  1. In Canada, most milk is sold in clear plastic bags.
  2. Canadians are oblivious to the fact that it’s any different elsewhere.

The Canadians are stunned by the fact that not everyone knows the joy of snipping open a fresh milk bag while the rest of you stare on in horror.

Take a moment if you need to. I know this is hard information to process.

Good? Let’s continue. Canadians purchase their milk in a large plastic bag that contains three smaller, clear plastic bags filled with milk. We are able to pour the milk by placing a bag in a milk jug, snipping off one of the corners, and tilting it appropriately.

The commotion over this simple difference in packaging has even spawned websites complete with demonstrations.

The explanation?

It’s easier to recycle the bags, shipping is safer since there is rarely any leakage, and it’s cheaper to package. Many people also claim that the milk stays fresher because you can open one bag at a time versus cracking open an entire jug.

All in all the milk bag is a worthy investment.

*Note: It is still possible to buy cartons or jugs of milk in Canada, just generally pricier.

You should include a picture of aforementioned bags.

that is so bizarre! i can’t wait to learn more :)

  • There will definitely be much more to come!

Yeah. You have NO IDEA how fascinating I find this.

I SO want to visit Canada someday!

I remember when I first found out Americans didn’t have bagged milk. I was mind-blown. I had to make a YouTube video with my brother showing how milk was poured in Canada because all the Americans I knew are retarded and were like “Wouldn’t it spill?!” Because obviously Canadians aren’t intelligent enough to create a system of milk pouring that doesn’t result in spillage.

I live over in BC and when I was little we had those little bags, no we just have the cartons and jugs of it. I have no idea why we stoped having them. They also do not have milk bags in Alberta. If it is cheaper I don’t know why they would ever stop.

  • Holy crap, this is crazy! In middle school we drank milk out of individual-sized plastic bags, but that’s the extent of my milk-in-bag knowledge. Can’t wait to read more :)

Yeah, over here in the West (BC/Alberta) bags aren’t such a big thing, unfortunately.
More often than not we use the jugs or cartons.

    What.

I thought it was weird when I went to Ecuador and they had milk in cartons on the shelf and not in the fridge! But from what you said, it does make sense.

The US should invest in… milk bags. That sounds terrible.

I wouldn’t say MOST milk is sold in bags. It certainly isn’t where I live. It is very much available, but it isn’t in the majority.

  • I’m surprised someone doesn’t sell little clips (on the order of those “chip clips“) to hold a folded-over top of the bag shut to keep the milk inside fresher. But I guess Canadians don’t like their milk as fresh as we do in the States. ;)

  • I’ve lived in Canada for all of my 32 years and I’ve never had milk from a bag.

ALOS LOL KINKAKINKA WHUT R U DOING HERE.

Haha I’m so American. Milk in bags kind of fascinates me and I’m not sure why. It would be mighty easier to dispose of considering my roommate and I go through 2 gallons a week. My coworkers found it oddly hilarious.

Wow. I’m shocked that people don’t know what milk bags are. Here in Wisconsin, we actually have those, only they’re in white. Same plastic container too. As far as I know, only Kwik Trip, carries them. And that’s a gas station.

Pity that these bags aren’t in high demand here. At least not yet.

  • For a long time I didn’t realize Americans don’t have milkbags.
Its a funny little difference between us.

  • This topic is quite trendy on the Internet right now. What do you pay attention to while choosing what to write ?

    that is so strange.

this is all we have in nz

  • ash

Huh, I had no idea. Interesting.

tho this is true for most canadians living in ontario, most of the rest of canada actually gets their milk in 4L plastic jugs, or 2L cartons…

  • Kristen

I’ve lived in Manitoba my whole life and haven’t once seen milk in a bag. Ever. “Most” of milk sold in Canada is bagged? I get that it’s lighthearted and everything, but it looks like most of the information on your entire site is incorrect.

  • Mod

Kristen: While you may not have access to them, milk bags are very common on the west and east coasts of the country, specifically Ontario where the majority of the county’s population lives. It is in no way incorrect to state that most of Canada has access to them.

The bigger shock is when Americans come up for a visit and see that we label “whole milk” as “homo milk”. Never fails to incite the giggles.
